In March of 2024, I participated in a grant writing workshop run by Buffalo's poet laureate Aitina Fareed-Cooke. She pushed all of the workshop participants to stand up and share our ideas out loud. The joy and fulfillment this simple (but frightening) act brought me, showed me that it was indeed possible to go about starting a conversation through art about my life-changing childbearing experience. From this clarity flowed a plan for an ambitious portrait project with seven of Buffalo's postpartum people.

I used the ensuing months to write my proposal and apply for local funding. I will be posting again soon with exciting news, stay tuned!

This project is made possible by generous grants:

Arts Services Inc.’s Creative Impact Fund (a New York State Senate Initiative supported by the NYS Legislature and the Office of the Governor, and administered by the New York State Council of the Arts)

University at Buffalo’s Communities of Care Grant (a community-engaged study of healthcare centering historically marginalized voices, and supported by the Mellon Foundation)
